In situations of distress, it is easy to get upset, it is easy to get enraged and lash out. And it’s easier to take things personally and get offended, even though it wasn’t intended to be. But, do you know what’s tough? To stay come in such aggravating circumstances. We have got it all mixed up; If being angry/feeling negative emotions is easy, and staying calm is the tough choice, then getting angry is a sign of weakness and not strength. On the contrary, staying calm is a sign of incredible strength.

Here are a few reasons why staying calm is, in fact, a Superpower:

  • You have blissful energy — You have the ability to control your emotions irrespective of the outside situation. This means that prior to automatically reach to a situation in a non-conscious way, you take a moment to create space between the circumstance and your reaction to it. During this space, you are most likely to react in the best possible way. Now, it takes skill and practice to create a space in such aggravating circumstances. Tip: Discipline is the fastest way!
  • Act when the time is right or do not react at all — Act when the time is right; the space you create as mentioned above gives you the necessary time needed for your reaction. It does not mean that you will get hours to think, or even a few minutes in certain circumstances. But, all that is needed is a few seconds. Psychologists recently found an estimate of around 60 bits per second for the maximum processing speed of the human brain; So, that’s more than enough time for you. Be inward, rather than outward. Don’t let the situation or others’ actions make you angry, unhappy, etc. Your only source is within you!

Foods that help stay calm; Sip and devour

  • Green tea throughout the day is one of the healthiest options.
  • Chillax with some chocolates.
  • Be Winnie the Pooh, and have your honey!
  • Some chewing gum wouldn’t hurt.
  • Put your jaw to work. Crunch and munch properly.

Find some inner peace using the below tips

  • Be in tune with the Universe — Meditate.
  • Connect with your breath — Search for some breathing techniques and follow whichever suits you.
  • Visualise — Daydream, it’s a good thing, trust me!
  • Say your ABCs or numbers backwards.
  • Close your peepers — A little darkness might help, but don’t create your own Batcave.

Treat your body right

  • Massage your hands.
  • Try acupressure.
  • Take out your frustration on a stress ball.
  • Splash cold water on your face.
  • Massage your scalp — use oils.

Make space for yourself

  • Find some solitude.
  • Zen out.
  • Get some rays.
  • Keep everything organized.
  • Exercise regularly and get your heart rate up.
  • Hit the tracks with your favourite tracks.
  • Solve crosswords after a trek/hike.

Remember, even the greatest Superheroes know to stay calm most of the time in most situations; Unless they’re being attacked by aliens, which is highly unlikely in your case!
